UK invested in crack down on Illegal Tobacco and Vape Trad

On 23 March 2025, the UK press released: aiming to protect public health,  UK government spent a £10 million investment to recruit nearly 80 apprentice enforcement officers targeting illegal tobacco and vape sales. The initiative has attracted vaping industry’s attention and support.

 Key Points:

UK government, spent £10 million to recruit 80 enforcement officers to tackle illegal sales of tobacco and vape.

According to Tobacco and Vapes Bill, “ in order to establish smoke-free environment for next generation, retailers who sold vapes or tobacco to anyone born after 1 January 2009 faced £200 on-the-spot fines”.

UKVIA and IBVTA support the crackdown, praising the move to protect consumers and support legal businesses.

Enforcement is already delivering results, including recent seizures worth nearly £10,000.

New Law and Enforcement

Under the Tobacco and Vapes Bill, stricter penalties will apply to retailers selling to underage individuals, including immediate £200 fines in England and Wales.

Andrea Leadsom, Minister for Public Health, stated:

“Buying illicit tobacco and vapes may seem cheaper but poses serious health risks and is often linked to criminal activity.”

 

Industry Support

UKVIA Director General John Dunne said:

“We’ve long called for more enforcement. This action equips Trading Standards to go after rogue traders who endanger public health.”

IBVTA Chief Executive Gillian Golden added:

“This investment is vital. Trading Standards need support to uphold fairness and safety in the vape market.”

Initial Results and Future Plans

The government’s action has already delivered strong result. In York and Trowbridge, the government has already confiscated nearly £10,000 worth of illegal products.

As a results, the government plans to recruit over 200 additional compliance officers to expand efforts nationwide.

With industry support and strengthened enforcement, the UK is moving toward a smoke-free future.
